‘Full Darkness and Moral Injury:

how might an understanding of moral injury in warfare inform pastoral care of military personnel?’

The Revd Dr Brian S Powers

Following his monograph, Full Darkness: Original Sin, Moral Injury and Wartime Violence (William B Eerdmans Press), the Reverend Dr Brian Powers will be elaborating on the contribution of Christian theology to understanding moral injury in war and the care of military personnel.   Dr Powers is a theologian, former Special Operations Weather Team officer in the U.S. Air Force and a veteran of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.  As the inaugural William Bernard Vann Fellow at Durham University, he is undertaking a unique three-year postdoctoral fellowship dedicated to the study of the relationship between Christianity and the armed forces. The Vann Fellowship is named in memory of The Revd Bernard William Vann VC, who was killed in action on 3 October 1918, the fourth and last British clergyman to be awarded the Victoria Cross in the First World War. It is attached to the Department of Theology and Religion’s Michael Ramsey Centre for Anglican Studies but is open to the study of all Christian traditions.
